Meet the man with the plan.
Hello! I’m Chris Rognstad — Inventor & Founder of The Horticulture Camera
The idea began with two things I’ve always loved: photography and plants. As an avid gardener with a passion for horticulture, I wanted something every grower can appreciate—greater control and peace of mind when away from a grow environment for extended periods of time. Plus, I wanted a cool time-lapse camera for my plants.
In March 2021, I needed to leave home for a week during the critical final stage of a grow. At the time, I had no reliable way to see what was happening, monitor environmental conditions, or remotely water my plants.
So I improvised.
I placed a Canary security camera inside the grow and positioned a moisture-level stake in the soil where I could see it through the camera. Before leaving, I overwatered my plants in hopes they would make it through the week.
At the time, I couldn’t find the type of connected grow technology I needed. There were no smart power strips with integrated environmental sensors, no dedicated grow cameras, and no single system that could give me the level of monitoring, automation, and remote control I was looking for.
That experience sparked a simple question:
Why couldn’t photography, security, environmental monitoring, automation, and remote control all be combined into one intuitive system?
That question became a mission.
The Meaning Behind Our Logo
I know our logo may be controversial to some people, but its meaning is important to me. The Horticulture Camera was born in the cannabis-growing community, and I don’t want to hide that history simply because the technology has grown into something much bigger.
For decades, cannabis users have been stereotyped as lazy, unmotivated, or unintelligent. I believe that stereotype overlooks a community filled with creative thinkers, entrepreneurs, inventors, growers, and highly motivated people who are constantly experimenting, learning, and finding better ways to do things.
Remember those old commercials where the girl was melting into the couch? That’s actually where I came up with the idea—I was sitting right next to her.
I’m kidding, of course. I was a kid when that commercial aired. But the stereotype behind advertisements like that is exactly what I want to challenge.
The truth is, this invention came from a cannabis grower trying to solve a real problem. I’m certainly not claiming I was the only person capable of thinking of it. Other growers were thinking along similar lines, and eventually someone was going to pursue it. I simply believed in the idea enough to go after it.
Today, the technology has potential far beyond cannabis cultivation. The same core system can be applied to traditional horticulture, greenhouses, gardens, aquariums, vivariums, and many other controlled environments.
That’s why customers purchasing the system for non-cannabis applications will have the option of neutral, non-cannabis branding. In some cases, the cannabis elements may simply be offered as an optional decal or sticker that customers can choose to add themselves.
Someone shouldn’t have to put cannabis leaves on their controller just because they want to manage a fish tank, grow tomatoes, maintain a greenhouse, or automate another environment. We want this technology to be accessible to everyone while still honoring the community where the idea began.
And while I personally like our logo and what it represents, that doesn’t mean I’m not flexible. I understand that some investors, strategic partners, retailers, or customers may feel differently about cannabis imagery. The logo is not set in stone.
What matters most to me is building THC Grow Systems into a successful company and putting this technology in front of the right people who can help us take it further. If evolving our branding helps us reach larger markets, attract the right investment partners, or create better opportunities for the company, I’m absolutely open to that conversation. The mission and the technology are more important than any single logo.
I’m proud of where this invention came from, but I’m equally focused on where it can go.
Make no mistake: this invention was born from cannabis growing. I’m proud of that history—but the technology isn’t limited by it, and neither is the company behind it.
"I believe I can see the future of tech. When inventing a new technology and deciding to bet on it or not, you must first imagine the future with out it, if you cant, you need to prossue it, or watch somebody else do it. especially if it is something you are passionate about, you have do it."
